DIY All-Natural Dark Tanning Oil for a Healthy Sun-Kissed Glow

Having moved away from toxic skincare and makeup over the past year, I naturally wanted to find a clean product to replace my favorite tanning oil which was filled with harmful ingredients. After searching for an all-natural product and familiarizing myself with the ingredients quality brands were using I realized it would be super easy (and cost efficient) to make my own tanning oil. More importantly, I can rest easy knowing the ingredients I’m putting on my skin are safe.

Not only is skin the largest organ, but it absorbs the majority of what you slather onto it, going directly into your bloodstream within seconds. Many everyday personal care products and cosmetics that claim to improve your skin contain harsh chemicals (like synthetic dyes, fragrances, and parabens) that can wreak havoc on your body and your health, causing hormonal imbalances and prematurely aging your skin. It’s worth the time and effort to look at the ingredients in the products you’re using every day, and to avoid toxic products whenever possible. When you can’t find a clean product that suits your needs, sometimes the best solution is to make one yourself.

When it comes to tanning oils, natural oils like coconut and almond are my personal fave. Not only are they safe, but they’re nourishing and moisturizing for your skin. Coconut oil has a natural SPF of about 4 making it a good choice for a natural tanning oil. Almond and olive oil are both rich in vitamin E, an antioxidant with soothing properties that moisturize the skin and can help give you that golden sunkissed glow. Fresh carrot juice results in a deeper tan and soothing ylang ylang, which is an antiseptic, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, adds a slightly floral scent.

As with any sun exposure, always apply sunscreen and let it dry for a bit before putting on tanning oil so you can protect your skin against harmful UV rays and avoid getting burned.

What You Need

4 oz glass spray bottle (blue or amber glass)

2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

2 tbsp extra virgin coconut oil

2 tbsp almond oil

1 tbsp carrot juice (about 1-2 small carrots)

5-7 drops ylang ylang essential oil

Instructions

Pour ingredients into the spray bottle. If the coconut oil is solid, warm it over low heat until melted. Use a funnel to make it easier to pour the ingredients into the bottle. Cover the bottle with the cap and shake to get the ingredients evenly distributed. Apply to skin and lay out in the sun.
